Open, shut. She was fascinated by it. I couldn’t help but think how like that we are. Open, shut. We open ourselves to new things, then shut down. We open up to intimacy in relationships and sometimes shut that down. We open up to new ideas, then shut down and stick with the old.

The chattering increased. Then we spied him, a brown squirrel, quite small, tail just a-twitchin’. He was perched on a branch, and boy, was he mad. Clearly, he did not like us being in his territory. Madder’n a wet hen, is what I thought. The closer I inched, the noisier the chattering got, until he scampered off.

The more I thought about it, and all its possibilities and ramifications, the worse it seemed to get. A molehill was becoming a mountain, and all in my mind. A trickle can do that.
