Hangman’s Noose by Marion Smith
The other day in church, before the service started, I noticed two children playing a game that had occupied many hours for my sister and me when we were children. We called it “ Hangman’s noose.” Blank spaces were drawn at the bottom of the page, denoting the number of letters in a particular word. The goal was to guess the word before making too many mistakes, as each wrong letter added another part to a hanging figure. (Whoever thought up this game??) There were the head, arms, and legs to be drawn in, and then ¼, depending upon the rule of the day ¼, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, fingers, and perhaps toes.
Let’s play the game today, with a little variation. Today, my word has six letters. __ __ __ __ __ __. Rather than letters, however, we will use six important factors to fill in the spaces. When we have these six things, we can be sure we will not be hung by Satan. He will not strangle us with his noose of sin, which separates us from God.
The truth is, we only need one factor, and the rest are items to keep us on the right path of the Christian life. The number one thing required is salvation, gained by recognizing we are sinners and accepting the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross. The 2nd factor is allowing Jesus to be the Lord of our lives. Then we need to pray, read the Bible, nurture Christian friendships, and worship God at a church of your choosing.
I am sure you know my word is CHRIST- the living son of God. He came into this world to rescue us from Satan’s grasp, and I am forever grateful.
Thank you, dear Lord, for children in the sanctuary where I worship. Thank you for such a weird little paper game could give me this glimpse from you.
You are one awesome God!!!
