Open, Shut by Sally I. Kennedy
A pint-sized, freckle-faced girl in a red dress and sandals was walking back and forth in the market, waiting for her grandmother. She had discovered the magic place on the mat. It was too irresistible; she continued jumping onto the mat, spreading her arms wide as if saying, ”Open sesame!” The sliding glass door would open. He’d run off; it would close. Then the scenario would repeat.
Open, shut. She was fascinated by it. I couldn’t help but think how like that we are. Open, shut. We open ourselves to new things, then shut down. We open up to intimacy in relationships and sometimes shut that down. We open up to new ideas, then shut down and stick with the old.
When our spirits are open, we are teachable. When closed, we aren’t. When we become Christians, the Holy Spirit sets up a classroom inside us. He is our teacher. If our spirits are open, then He can teach us. If closed, He can’t.
Hopefully, my spirit is open to what the Lord wants to show me. However, perhaps during those times it is closed, it might be good to remember the little girl in the red dress and her great excitement to see the door fly open once again. Open – shut……….. open!
Meditation: But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. – John 14:26
