When Blackbirds Teach Us: A Gentle Reflection on Satisfaction, Seeking, and the Soul

Blackbirds

Blackbirds  by Marion Smith

Recently, as I sat on my back porch, I noticed a large flock of blackbirds in the backyard. They were flying from the trees to the ground and back again. While on the ground, they scurried around looking for food. They would hunt and peck, hunt and peck, hunt and peck. Finally, one of them noticed the bird feeder filled with delicious sunflower seeds. This particular bird flew to the feeder, took its fill, and remained still for a very long time. I am not sure if this bird signaled the others, or they just noticed him in their field of vision, but in just a moment, others had joined him. They filled each available perch on the feeder while twenty or more sat on the fence, looking as if they were waiting their turn. Some flew to the ground and ate the seed which spilt over from the feeder as the birds on the perches munched away.

This is the case for many people. They flit here and there, looking for something to satisfy them. They think they’ve discovered it, so they perch for a while and digest the activity they’ve pursued. Hopefully, someone they know or encounter will have found the true source of satisfaction (a personal relationship with Jesus). The opportunity for sharing the gospel will arise, and the “flitting” person will have spiritual food for thought, or perhaps a salvation experience!

Also, the Bible is like a full bird feeder – it is waiting for people to come and feast. When this occurs, they will no longer be satisfied to hunt and peck and hunt and peck for fulfilment. They will share the good news, and their friends will want to come to the table, also, for the feast which has been prepared for them.

P.S.

Blackbird Music

As soon as I saw that flock of blackbirds in my backyard, I thought of the song/nursery rhyme “Sing a Song of Sixpence.”  The truth of the matter is this song is truly nonsensical and a little gory. The point is; however, I associated this visual happening with a song I  had learned as a child. How important it is for us, as parents and grandparents, to teach our children Bible songs, as well as nursery rhymes. God’s message in each of the children’s Christian songs is presented in a simple and beautiful manner. We are blessed each time we remember them and pass on their teachings to the next generation. They convey God’s truths.

When the Church Grows Dim: Who Turned Off the Light?

The church did not grow dark because the lamps failed. It grew dark because people stopped bringing them. This reflection asks an uncomfortable question: when you stay away, what part of God’s house goes dark because of you?
